Understanding Creative People

Updated: Oct 6, 2019

Last time, I talked about the rise of creativity in our culture. Now, let’s take a quick look at understanding the creative personality type.

As educators and business owners start to promote creativity in the classroom and boardroom, you will find that there is a shift in the undercurrent of the environment when you add in creativity and encourage true creatives to thrive. Although highly sought after individuals, over a period of time, they are sometimes grossly underused and often misunderstood. Some of these people are then further labeled as multipotentialites. According to puttylike.com, “They are someone with many interests and creative pursuits. Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do. They have many paths and pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously (or both). Multipotentialites thrive on learning, exploring, and mastering new skills. Excellent at bringing disparate ideas together in creative ways, makes them incredible innovators and problem solvers.”

Finding ways to teach and ultimately work with these unique individuals is a pleasure but you may want to research a little bit to know how they operate and what makes them tick. As a creative myself, here are a few insider tips to get you off to a great start:

  • Not all creative types are an unorganized mess. Some are highly organized especially on a current project that they are working on. That being said, one person's mess, is another man's work in progress!

  • When put under too much stress with strict project deadlines, the creative process can dry up and although capable of still completing the work, it may not be of the same caliber of prior work.

  • It’s hard to control creativity and sometimes the best ideas come at the most random times, so having a few projects running at the same time can be a good thing, so don’t panic when you see many things spread out in various stages of completion!

  • A little bit of trust goes a long way! When a creative feels that you trust their work, they can accomplish anything.

  • Not every idea works, not every project will be amazing, and if you can give them another try, the second or even third time's the charm.

  • Creatives aren’t always the moody artist that you are thinking of. That being said, they can be incredibly complex individuals that can even forget to eat during an intense creative session. They aren’t ignoring you, they are just in the zone.

Bottom line, creatives can bring a new viewpoint to any project and you may just be surprised at the outcome!
